How to Paint Wood Furniture Black

Painted black furniture can coordinate with any furniture pieces in your home. You can add black chairs to a wooden table or place a small black accent table in a room filled with walnut. Paint is also a fantastic solution for the homeowner who has a house full of mismatched pieces. Clean the furniture with ammonia-based cleaner. Dip a rag into the solution and scrub the furniture lightly. Saturate a toothbrush with cleaner to scrub the small crevices.

Sand the entire piece with medium grit sandpaper. For larger pieces of furniture, use a palm sander. Remove the top layer of paint. Sand just enough to scuff the surface of the furniture and allow the paint to adhere. Wipe away sanding dust with a damp rag.

Apply a coat of oil-based primer. Paint the furniture with a good quality paintbrush. Oil-based primer has good adhesion and will protect your painted finish from stains.

Paint the furniture with acrylic or latex paint. Paint the corners and other hard-to-reach areas with a small trim brush. Apply a very light coat of paint to these areas.

Pour paint into a paint pan. Run a smooth foam roller through the paint, removing the excess paint. Apply a light coat of paint to the furniture with the roller. A smooth foam roller will give you a finish with very little texture. Let the first coat dry to the touch. Apply two to three additional coats. Let the final coat dry overnight.

Paint the furniture with a urethane topcoat. Choose a nonyellowing formula. Apply two coats of topcoat. Allow the urethane to dry overnight.
