How to Make Up a Vanity Table With Fabric Skirts

How to Make Up a Vanity Table With Fabric Skirts

A vanity is often looked upon as an item of function rather than beauty. An inexpensive and simple way to make over your vanity table is to add a decorative skirt. Vanity skirts also allow you to hide items such as plumbing or bathroom products. You don't have to be experienced in sewing in order to create a skirt for your vanity table. Make your own vanity addition without sewing a stitch. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Sketch a simple rough drawing of your vanity. If the vanity is rectangular, sketch the three separate panels that compose the three sides that extend from the wall. If the vanity is round, sketch one large rectangle. This rectangle will represent the piece of fabric that you will use to create the skirt.

    2

Measure the length of the vanity's outer edge using a fabric tape measure. If the vanity is rectangular in shape, measure lengths of the front and two sides extending from the wall. If the vanity is round, simply wrap the tape measure around the border of the vanity. Measure the height of the vanity from the floor.

    3

Write your measurements onto your sketch. Add 2 inches to the sides of each panel if you have a rectangular vanity. If your vanity is round, add 2 inches to both sides of the rectangle that you sketched. Add 6 inches to the length from the floor up to the top of the vanity. The 2 inches on the sides of the rectangles will be 2-inch hems for the sides of the fabric. The 6 inches added to the height will be broken down to a 2-inch hem for the top of the fabric and a 4-inch hem for the bottom of the fabric.

    4

Lay out a piece of fabric on a clean, flat work surface. Transfer the dimensions of the skirt from your sketch onto the piece of fabric. Mark the border with a fabric pencil and cut out the pattern. For round vanities, you will have one rectangular piece of fabric. For rectangular vanities, you will have three rectangular fabric panels.

    5

Turn under and iron the hems on the top, bottom and sides of your piece or pieces of fabric.

    6

Secure the hems by adding a bead of fabric glue between the creases that you ironed and the edges of the fabric and folding the hem into place. Press the hem to set the glue.

    7

Measure and cut pieces of heavy-duty ribbon that coincide with the lengths and widths of your fabric panel or panels. Glue these ribbons onto the outer edges of your fabric as a decorative border.

    8

Add hook-and-loop strips to the top front border of all fabric panels. Attach the other side of the hook-and-loop strips to the front and sides of the vanity's edges.

    9

Hang your vanity skirt by joining the hook-and-loop strips.
