How to Build Vanities

When most people think of a vanity they think of a bathroom cabinet with a sink. While this can also be called a vanity, but in most cases a vanity is really just a small table that is often placed in a bedroom. The table normally has a mirror and possible some drawers, but it essentially becomes a makeup center, simply a place to freshen up or apply makeup or do hair, without standing in the bathroom. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Select the size of the tabletop, and thus the size of the wood, that you want. Many times these tables will be roughly 3 or 4 feet wide and 1 1/2 to 2 feet deep. The size will ultimately rely on the space that you have and the amount of stuff you wish to keep on the vanity.

    2

Mark your design with a pencil or marker that you would like your vanity to be on the bottom of the wood.

    3

Cut the wood to the size and design you marked out. Sand the top and sides of the wood.

    4

Paint or stain the tabletop as well as the legs. The color is completely up to you, but often vanities will simply be dark stained or painted an accent color for the room. You may need to apply a second coat to the vanity, depending on the color. Allow the paint or stain to dry completely.

    5

Mount the leg plates on the underside of the tabletop. These plates can be mounted with small screws that come with them. Each leg plate will have a hole in each corner where you will use a screw and screwdriver to attach it to the vanity top. The leg plates should be placed flush with the side edge of the table top in each corner.

    6

Screw the legs into the leg plates. This should be fairly easy to do, but if you have any problems you may want to drill guide holes for the screws into the legs.

    7

Press the furniture glides into the bottom of each leg. This will protect the floor. If you have a tile or hardwood floor, you may want to use felt pads on the bottom of the legs.
