Pool Table Regulation Sizes

Billiards is a popular game that is enjoyed by many worldwide. For tournament and serious play, pool tables are strictly regulated across a variety of features. Games can be found in bars and pool halls all over, and pool can be played in a variety of ways. For tournaments, 15-ball, 8-ball, and 9-ball are the most common.

History

    According to the BCA (Billiard Congress of America), the game of pool (referred to as "billiards" by professionals) was developed in the 15th century in Northern Europe. The game 15-ball billiards was developed in America, though snooker is still hugely popular in Europe.

Pool Table Size

    There are various sizes available for pool tables, according to the BCA: 3.5' x 7', 4' x 8', and 4.5' x 9'. The 4.5' x 9' table is the official size for professional tournament play.

Play Area Size

    According to the BCA, for tournament play the play area must be 50'' x 100'', and this is measured from the cushion rubbers on each side to their opposite on the other side of the table.

Table Height

    Table heights can vary, according to the BCA. The measurements are taken from the playing surface level down to the bottom of the leg, and most tables range between 29-1/4'' to 31'' in height.

Pocket Openings

    Pocket openings are measured from opposing ends of the rubber playing cushions, straight across the mouth of the pocket. For corner pockets, according to the BCA, measurements range between 4-7/8'' to 5-1/8''. For side pockets, measurements range between 5-3/8'' to 5-5/8''.
